Spelpaus

Spelpaus (Spelpaus.se) is Sweden's national self-exclusion register, operated by the gambling regulator Spelinspektionen, through which consumers can block themselves from all licensed gambling in Sweden — online and land-based — in a single action.

Launched with Sweden's re-regulation in January 2019, Spelpaus lets players exclude for one, three or six months, or until further notice; the "until further notice" option lasts at least twelve months and requires an active request to lift. Registration uses BankID, Sweden's national e-identification, which makes matching precise.

Swedish licensees must:

• check Spelpaus in real time at registration and every login, refusing service to registered players;
• suppress all direct marketing to excluded individuals, including via affiliates;
• apply the block across all gambling verticals — betting, casino, bingo and lotteries alike.

Because BankID underpins both Spelpaus and Swedish KYC, checks are deterministic — there is no fuzzy-matching ambiguity, and therefore no tolerance for misses.

Why it matters: Spelinspektionen has sanctioned operators specifically for marketing to or accepting Spelpaus-registered players, and Sweden's licence regime treats such failures as threats to the licence itself. Spelpaus connectivity is a hard prerequisite for the Swedish market, handled at platform level in the Vuch compliance suite.
